Count Enea Antonio Caprara (1631-1701) 1695-96
Bronze | 94.0 x 64.8 x 80.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 1146

-
Bronze half-length bust of Marshal Count Enea Antonio Caprara (1631-1701), who served in the army of Emperor Leopold I. He wears armour surrounded by drapery, & holds a marshal's baton in right hand. The collar and badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece are separately made and applied. The insignia, the Medusa mask at the centre of the breastplate and other details of the armour are gilded. The baton is a replacement.
This is the only portrait bust by Soldani which is independent of a funerary monument. It was no doubt commissioned to celebrate Caprara's admission to the Order of the Golden Fleece following the defence of Peterwardein in 1694. Soldani is known to have been working on the bust in 1695 and it was finished the following year.
Provenance
Recorded in the Caprara family palace in Bologna in an inventory of 1726. Purchased by George IV through Thomas Hamlet in 1826 for £226.10s
