English translations of a selction of Tipu Sultan's letters from the state papers of Mysore, acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales.
The translator, William Kirkpatrick (1754–1812), was an East India Company officer, diplomat and orientalist, then retired in England. Kirkpatrick had served on Lord Cornwallis's staff as Persian interpreter in the Third Anglo-Mysore War of 1790–1 and was military secretary to Richard Wellesley during the Fourth (and final) Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. After the fall of Seringapatam, he was appointed one of the commissioners for the partition of Mysore. -
