The History of Kamschatka and the Kuriliski islands is a 1764 English translation of the 1755 Russian history of Siberia and the Kuril Islands by the naturalist Stepan Krasheninnikov. Educated in St Petersburg, between 1731 and 1743, Krasheninnikov accompanied the Second Kamchatka Expedition and made important observations on the natural history and geography of the region. Sent ahead of the main party to Okhotsk and Kamchatka, he gathered the most extensive knowledge of a little-known region. The work drew extensively on the earlier findings of the German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller and included descriptions of the language and culture of Indigenous Itelmen and Koryak people. The 1764 translation was made by the Scottish surgeon James Grieve at the end of his service in Russia as physician to the Empress Elizabeth.
