This book is an account of Amédée-François Frezier’s 1712-14 expedition to South America. While not a botanical expedition – its main aim was to accurately survey the coast of Chile and Peru and ascertain the strength of Spanish fortifications in the region – Frezier is best known today for bringing back specimens of the beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis), one of the two species of wild strawberry that were later used to cultivate the modern fruit.
Provenance
Probably the copy listed in the inventory of George III’s library at Richmond Lodge, prior to its dispersal c. 1766. In the library of George III at Windsor by 1780.
