Lucy Finley, a governess in the household of General Muravyov (1796–1866) in St Petersburg, became acquainted with Thomas Atkinson in 1846, after his return from his first extensive trip to the interior of Russia. They were married in 1848, after which Lucy Atkinson accompanied her husband on his travels ‘in countries where an English lady had never been seen before’. She became an intrepid horsewoman and markswoman, skills for which she was much admired by the Russian peoples whom she met.
Lucy Atkinson’s account of their travels differs in emphasis from that of her husband; where he discussed scientific and artistic subjects, she addressed their adventures, and particularly those affecting herself, as a lonely English woman with a babe in arms. She also describes at various points meeting with exiles from the Decembrist uprisings of 1825, when various Russian army officers led a revolt against Emperor Nicholas I’s assumption of the throne in place of his elder brother, who had renounced his claim to the throne in 1823.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Queen Victoria after 1863
