As domestic travel became easier in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century and tourists began to make visits to the large country estates of the landed gentry. Such visits followed a set route, with the housekeeper showing the tourists the house and the gardener providing a tour of the grounds. This new market saw guidebooks quickly become a necessity and the short, lightweight pamphlets helped visitors to understand better the history of the estate and the artworks on display. This guide to Burghley House, the home of the Cecil family, was published in 1815.
