Between 1836 and 1837, the British Army officer, James Edward Alexander, undertook an expedition to Namaqualand and Damaraland (now Namibia) on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society. This book is his published account of the journey, during which he collected specimens of natural history and recorded some of the vocabulary of the Herero people of the region, the first European to do so.
