In 1610, George Sandys, youngest son of Edwin Sandys, Archbishop of York, travelled throughout the eastern Mediterranean returning to England in 1612. Sandys published his account of the journey in 1615 and its popularity led to it running through many editions throughout the seventeenth century. Sandys's work contains an extensive account on the manners and customs of the Ottoman Turks in Constantinople (modern Istanbul), remarking particularly on Turkish cuisine. The book contains one of the earliest English accounts of coffee consumption, the taste of which Sandys compared to the 'black broth' of the ancient Spartans.
