Olearius accompanied the Duke of Holstein's trade embassy to Russia in order to record the event, and wrote a best-selling account of his visit. He was particularly interested in the religious festivals that he witnessed, including a procession in Moscow on Palm Sunday that recreated Christ's entry into Jerusalem.
