History and description of the ancient city of York ... ; v.2 / by Wm. Hargrove. 1818
RCIN 1140543
-
William Hargrove was an early nineteenth century newspaper editor, publisher and historian. The youngest son of the Knaresborough bookseller, Ely Hargrove (see RCINs 1072390 & 1072379), William moved to York in 1813, where he took up ownership of the York Herald newspaper. He edited the paper for 35 years and published several books on the history of the city, such as this three-volume history printed in 1818. He initially wanted to reprint the monumental 1736 history Eboracum by Francis Drake, but there was little demand for another edition of the work.
