The Archdeacon of Canterbury is responsible for enthroning many of England’s new bishops, including the Archbishop of Canterbury. This book contains an account of the enthronement feast served in 1503 for William Warham (c.1450–1532). The first course, which included dishes such as ‘Frumenty Ryall’ and ‘Fritter Dolphin’, was followed by a subtlety or warner (a temporary table ornament usually made of paste) showing the King and Queen presenting the new archbishop to St Paul. As well as reproducing a description of William Warham’s enthronement feast, this volume includes several engraved views of Canterbury, an account of the history of the role of the Archdeacon of Canterbury, and a list of the food served at the enthronement of George Neville, Archbishop of York in 1465.
