A tester bed of carved gilt wood in the neo-classical style, with cream silk hangings applied with polychrome embroidery depiciting trails of foliage and flowers. The tester is carved and gilded on the outside and inside and is also lined with embroidery, the end posts support a tester with acroteria (corner palmettes) and a scrolling foliate pattern.
The bed and the accompanying two chairs and ten stools may have been designed under the supervision of John Yenn, Sir William Chambers's supervising architect for works in the State Apartments at Windsor Castle from 1778-17. The maker of the bed was possibly Robert Campbell, upholsterer and cabinet maker.
The embroidery was worked at Mrs. Phoebe Wright's 'Royal School of embroidering females' between 1772-8 at her premises in Great Newport Street and by Mrs. Wright's niece, Nancy Pawsey, working from her home in Silsoe near Bedford. Whilst Mrs. Wright - 'a pattern drawer of eminence' may have designed the embroidery Mrs. Pawsey's needlework skills were recognised as pre-eminent - 'the Head Board is the part down at Silsoe, her Majesty having herself desired that Mrs. Pawsey might work that as being most seen ...'.
The first record of the bed at Windsor is found in 1782 and describes it as hung on the inside with white satin and pale green curtains 'the whole being beautifully embroidered' and later records refer to valences of 'rich pea-green tabby'.
The bed has been conserved a number of times and underwent full treatment between 2005-8.Provenance
