-
Set during the Jacobite rising of 1715, Rob Roy tells the story of the travels of the young Englishman, Frank Osbaldistone to Glasgow and the Trossachs and his encounter with the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. While Scott's Rob Roy bears little resemblance to the historical figure, his romantic description of the character and vibrant depiction of the Highlands ensured that the novel was—it sold its inital print run of 10,000 in two weeks—and remains one of his most popular works. It played an important part in building upon romantic ideas of Highland culture and a resurgence of Scottish national identity already established in the poems The Lady of the Lake (1810) and The Lord of the Isles (1815) as well as in Scott's first novel Waverley (1814) that persisted throughout the nineteenth century.
