Dagger and scabbard 1850 - 1900
Gold, steel, enamel, diamonds, velvet and gold thread | RCIN 11255
-
A dagger or khanjar with a two-edged recurved watered crucible steel blade. The enamelled gold hilt modelled to represent a parrots head and inlaid with diamonds and rubies for eyes. The wooden scabbard covered with red velvet and enamelled gold mounts inlaid with diamonds. Attached to the hilt is an ornate tassel made with gold-wrapped thread. A marking on the blade suggests that the dagger came from the Bikaner armoury in Rajasthan. Ornate daggers such as this example were traditionally worn and exchanged at court to symbolise status.
