This atlas of views of the principal cities of the world was probably intended as a supplement to Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas. The map of London in this copy, though published in 1588, shows a view of the city with elements from the 1560s and 1570s. Southwark, on the south side of the Thames, was where a Londoner went for entertainment, and is where Shakespeare’s Globe theatre would later be located.
Provenance
Probably acquired and re-bound during the reign of King Edward VII.
