Lansdell’s second journey through Russia after his Siberian adventures took him, from June to December 1882, far into Siberia to Omsk, before turning south to Russia in Asia, what are now Kazakhstan, Uzbekhistan, Turkmenistan and other countries bordering China, visiting Tashkent, Samarkand, Bokhara and, finally, Odessa. His book was intended for three different readerships: the general reader interested in the narrative; the armchair traveller who wanted to know somewhat of the country, geography, flora and fauna, and of the people, their language and religion; and finally those of a more scientific bent, for whom he wrote more detailed material on flora and fauna. The book was dedicated to Emperor Alexander III, in recognition of the kindness with which Lansdell was met throughout his travels in Russia.
