Adam Lonitzer’s Krauterbuch, is a German herbal, first printed in 1557. Having served as professor of mathematics at the University of Marburg, in 1554, Lonitzer was appointed physician of the city of Frankfurt. In this role he set about revising the herbal of his predecessor in the post, Eucharius Rosslin the younger (published 1533), reusing many of the illustrations. Like many herbals, the book described not only the appearance of the plants but also their practical and medicinal uses. Lonitzer’s text was edited in the early seventeenth century by the physician Peter Uffenbach. Uffenbach’s edited edition soon became the definitive version and went through more than 20 editions before 1783. This copy is of the 1713 edition.
