This is a 1716 edition of the translation of the Bible made by Martin Luther in 1534. Luther's Bible is highly significant. It was the first translation of the Bible in German to use the Latin Vulgate, Greek and Hebrew texts. Luther did not have adequate knowledge of Greek and Hebrew and so he worked with fellow scholars such as his friend Philipp Melanchthon when producing the work. Luther's Bible spread quickly through Germany and around 200,000 copies had been sold before Luther's death in 1546. The form of German  used in the text also contributed to the development of the modern German language.
Interestingly, the pastedown inside the front board has been modified to contain two doors that reveal a list of donors of this Bible dated 1720.
This book was one of those selected by the Royal Librarian, Richard Rivington Holmes, in 1893 as a fine example of bookbinding in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle.

Binding information

Bound in vellum, with strapwork design forming arabesque, circular and heart shaped compartments, and gold tooling made up of various small floral tools, stars, vases and laurel leaves. Some appears to be painted. Unusual roll tool to edges of linear and triangle design.

Edges gilt and gauffered with crowned monogram (DB?). Clasps attach from bottom to top and have cherubs on bottom and men's faces on sides.
