A dagger or khanjar with an associated two edged re-curved steel blade. The green jade hilt carved in the shape of a horse's head and set with diamonds and rubies. The scabbard covered with purple velvet and chased gold mounts, the chape shaped to form a bird's head. Jade hilts carved to resemble horses were popular during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, and this example was probably made in the Mughal Empire. A jade hilted dagger such as this example was considered to be an object of luxury and was probably commissioned by a wealthy patron. The scabbard and blade probably contemporary to the Prince's tour.
