This binding, judging by its spine, was made for a calendar. The contents is now lost and has been replaced with blank pages.
This was one of the books selected by the Royal Librarian, Richard Rivington Holmes, in 1893 as a fine example of bookbinding in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle.
Binding information
Bound in red morocco for Henry Benedict, Cardinal York (1725-1807), before 1788, with the Stuart Royal Arms, differenced by a crescent [to show he was the second son], surmounted by a Prince's coronet, and a cardinal's hat, on both boards, with a cross-hatch tool to the inner corners with foliate tooling around, with palmette roll tool, double gilt fillet and triangular roll tool as edge border. Edges of boards tooled with foliate roll tool, as are turn ins. Spine divided into six compartments, with lettering to second, others with cornucopia, floral and foliate tools.Provenance
Bound for Henry Benedict, Cardinal York, younger brother of Prince Charles Edward, 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', before 1788. Loaned by Queen Victoria to the Burlington Fine Art Club Exhibition of Fine Binding in 1891 (Case P, No. 36 Pl. CII).
