The earliest known published work on the Romanisation of Chinese script for English speakers, published in India in 1809.
Joshua Marshman was a Christian missionary who spent much of his life in Bengal, where he emigrated with his family in 1799. He learnt Bengali, Sanskrit and Chinese, and in 1821 published the first translation of the Bible into Chinese.
