Mirror 1714-15
Giltwood and mirrored glass | 400.0 x 145.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 1105
-
An upright rectangular bevelled mirror with bevelled plate of one piece, the sides with strips of bevelled glass split into six sections by giltwood slips, the uprights at each side with Corinthian capitals below flaming finials, the shaped arched cresting of mirror glass within a carved foliate surround surmounted by a female mask emerging from five ostrich feathers.
Provenance
In all likelihood, this mirror is that supplied by John Gumley in 1715 for the Prince of Wales's Drawign Room at Hampton Court Palace and described in the Lord Chamberlain's accounts as 'a large glass in a glass frame and ffestoon finely done with carved and gilt work £149'. John Gumley was a leading supplier of mirrors and pier glasses in the early eighteenth century. He worked for the court in the furnishing of the Royal Palaces during the reigns of Queen Anne and George I. He occasionally worked in partnership with the cabinet-maker James Moore.
