Mirror c.1710-20
-
An upright rectangular mirror in a gilt wood frame with scrolled arched pediment with gilt-gesso foliage and chequered field surmounted by a carved and gilded eagle flanked by two female busts. The rectangular plate is within a frame of carved stylised anthemions and scrolls and corinthian capitals at the top of the uprights at each side.
Provenance
No specific invoice can be traced for this mirror but a quantity of furnishings (including mirrors) was supplied in 1715 by John Gumley for the Prince of Wales's apartments at Hampton Court and this mirror is likely to have formed a part of that commission. It may originally have been supplied for the Prince of Wales's Privy Chamber. John Gumley was a leading supplier of mirrors and pier glasses in the early eighteenth century. He worked for the court in the furnishing of the Royal Palaces during the reigns of Queen Anne and George I. He occasionally worked in partnership with the cabinet-maker James Moore.
