Last Post was written by the then Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, on the occasion of the funerals of Henry Allingham and Harry Patch in 2009. It pays tribute both to the soldiers who served in the First World War, and the poets who bore witness to the fighting. The piece takes as its starting point two lines from the poem Dulce et Decorum Est (quoting the Roman poet Horace: ‘it is sweet and proper [to die for one’s country]’) by Wilfred Owen, who died in action in 1918.
This sheet was designed and printed by the Gaspereau Press of Kentville, Nova Scotia. It is the first in an edition of 133, and was presented to Queen Elizabeth II by Duffy in December 2009.Provenance
