-
This book contains a speech made by the then Prince of Wales at the Guildhall in London upon his return from the 1901 Tour of the British Empire. The speech was originally printed in The Times in 1901, but this special edition of it was produced to mark the King's coronation in 1911.
At the time, the Tour was the largest undertaken by a member of the Royal Family, covering 45,000 miles in seven months. It visited Gibraltar, Malta, Aden (now part of Yemen), Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa and Canada. The Tour was originally intended to thank the people of the empire for their contributions in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) but it also provided an opportunity for a member of the Royal Family to open the first Australian Parliament at Melbourne following the country's federation in 1900.
