This is the first volume of John Lizars’s important medical textbook A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body (1822).
Lizars was an Edinburgh surgeon who was known for performing several ‘firsts’ while operating but it is this book for which he is most famous. Published in five volumes between 1822 and 1826 and containing illustrations engraved by his brother William, the work was intended to serve as a practical guide to dissection. The Royal Library holds the text of the first volume only. It was very popular and was used by students for several decades. -
