First published in 1839-40, Plantae uitiliores, illustrations of useful plants employed in the arts and medicine is a survey of common, ornamental and exotic plants. The work was essentially a nineteenth-century equivalent of the herbals of the seventeenth century. It combined beautiful colour plates of plants with scientific descriptions and accounts of their medicinal and culinary uses. Edited and illustrated by the botanist Mary Ann Burnett, some entries were written by her brother Gilbert. This later edition was printed between 1842 and 1850.
