Practical Observations on the means of preserving the health of soldiers is a treatise by the surgeon Edward Thornhill Luscombe. It concerns observations he had made regarding the general health of soldiers in military camps during the Peninsular War and diseases that afflicted soldiers in garrisons back in Britain. Luscombe noted that fevers and dysentery were prevalent in the camps in Spain while in Britain lung disorders and venereal disease was more common. After describing such diseases, Luscombe goes on to offer solutions to improve sanitation, recommending remedies such as quarantine for sick soldiers, regular outdoor exercise and the limiting of alcohol consumption.
