Newton's masterwork, Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica (known as the Principia), was published in Latin by the Royal Society in 1687. It was later revised in 1713 and 1726, and first published in English in 1729. In it he laid down the foundation of the science of mechanics, exploring particularly the laws of gravity and its effect upon the motions of the universe. His work attained speedy acceptance in the British scientific community, and abroad after about fifty years, and was not substantially outdated until the late 19th century.
