The Theory of Moral Sentiments is a philosophical work by the Scottish economist Adam Smith. First printed in 1759, it was Smith’s first published work. The book is an examination of contemporary moral thinking and argued that moral judgement, which was not present at birth, came from interactions with other people. These interactions, Smith argued, allow us to feel sympathy for others and make us more aware of our own behaviour.
