Conchologia iconia is a catalogue of shells from around the world by Lovell Augustus Reeve. Reeve had developed a passion for shell collecting from a young age. Born in 1814, by 20, he was discussing the classification of molluscs and prepared a two-volume work on the subject. After acquiring a large collection of Dutch shells, he set up shop on The Strand where he sold natural history specimens. This brought Reeve into contact with some of the most prominent naturalists of the day and gave him plenty of leisure time to prepare his catalogue.
The work was issued in monthly parts from 1843 and was remarkably successful, going through twenty volumes in total, with the final volume appearing in 1878. As a consequence, Reeve began to turn his business towards natural history publishing. Writing several more books on conchology in tandem with his main work. The publishing firm would go on to print many important natural history works in the nineteenth century, from large monographs to field guides and periodicals.
Reeve died in 1865, leaving the remaining volumes to be completed by the conchologist George Brettingham Sowerby II (1812-84).
