Lepidoptera Indica is an extensive catalogue of South Asian butterflies and moths, published between 1890 and 1913. The first six volumes were prepared by the naturalist Frederic Moore, with the final four finished by Charles Swinhoe.
Moore served as assistant curator of the museum of the East India Company and worked extensively with its natural history collections. The work is notable for its identification of several new species. However, Moore was a ‘splitter’, a naturalist that listed variations of different animals as new species, sometimes placing specimens of the same species across several genera.
