Look, Stranger! is a 1936 anthology by the poet W. H. Auden. On submitting his manuscript to the publishers Faber & Faber, Auden had given the work the preliminary title 'Thirty-one poems'. Neither poet nor publisher liked the name and a request was made for Auden to change it. Due to his travelling in Iceland, Auden was unavailable and Faber & Faber selected the title Look, Stranger! for the first British edition. Auden disliked the choice and for the first American edition in 1937 renamed the work On this Island.
In 1937, Auden was awarded the King's Gold Medal for Poetry for the work, He was the second recipient of the medal after Laurence Whistler in 1934. The award, known as the Queen's Gold Medal when the monarch is female, was instituted by King George V in 1933 at the suggestion of the Poet Laureate, John Masefield. It was created to celebrate the verse works of poets and translators from across the Commonwealth. It was only awarded three times before the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952: to Whistler in 1934, Auden in 1937 and Michael Thwaites in 1940. It has been awarded annually since 2000.Provenance
