Sèvres soft-paste porcelain cup and saucer. Dark blue ground with gilded decoration. Single standing figures of infants are painted in two upright oval reserves on the cup, and single reclining figures of infants in two horizontal reserves on the saucer, all in polychrome. The cup, which in plan is of irregular octagonal shape, is faceted (two of the eight facets rounded). It has a flared mouth and is fitted with a foliate ring handle with quiff in white and gold. The oval saucer of conforming outline has concave sides. A suspension hole is pierced in the foot of the saucer (used).
Provenance
Probably purchased in Paris for George IV by François Benois from ‘Madame Cruford’, the widow of Quintin Craufurd (d. 23 November 1819): ‘1 tasse à Déjeuner fond Bleu sujets d’enfans’. It was among the items bought in Paris by Benois which were despatched in six cases and opened on arrival on 13 May 1820. The receipt of cat. no. 243 at Carlton House was recorded by Benjamin Jutsham in August 1820: ‘A Coffee Cup & Saucer of Old Seve of Octogon form, Blue Ground & Gold ornaments Painted in Compartments of Cherubs &c.’.By 1826 cat. no. 243 was in the Anti Room to the Dining Room, Basement Floor, Carlton House: ‘No. 90. A Cup and Saucer of blue and gold Seve Porcelain, shaped and painted in four compartments of Infants’.
