Thomas Warton (1728-1790) was a poet and historian best known for his three-volume work The history of English poetry. He was a friend and contemporary of Dr Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds, among others. At the intercession of Reynolds, Warton was made poet laureate in 1785. As well as being a historical and literary critical writer, Warton also published poems. This volume is the first edition of his first collection of poetry, published in 1777. This volume, although published before Warton became poet laureate, includes several poems addressed to members of the royal family, including his poem On the marriage of the King, written to celebrate the marriage of King George III to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1761.
