Sèvres soft-paste porcelain broth basin, cover and circular stand. Beau bleu ground, richly gilded and painted in polychrome with quayside scenes in six reserves (four kidney-shaped and two oval). The circular basin is fitted with vertical white and gold looped foliate handles; those on the stand, also in white and gold, are formed of two C-shaped branches which meet in an oval cabochon. The ribbed white and gold rims of the cover and stand are seemingly entwined diagonally in low relief with a gilded ribbon, which on the stand is crossed at four points. The cover, with a shallow cavetto moulding in its outer half, rises to a boss crowned by a knob composed of a gilded pomegranate, white laurel leaves veined in gold and gilded berries. Suspension holes are pierced in the cover, bowl and stand (used). The foot of the basin is gilded, as is also its rim, which is notched on the inside. Below the rim is a frieze in thick and richly tooled gold composed of foliate scrolls, laurel and floral trails. The frieze is seemingly overlain by the reserves. The bands framing the two reserves on the basin are tooled with imbricated discs between zigzag lines, which are interrupted at four points by crossed ribbons.
Provenance
Bought by François Benois for George IV (almost certainly in Paris), it was entered by Benjamin Jutsham in his Carlton House receipts’ ledger on 26 January 1819: ‘[Received from] Benois A Broth Bason, Dish & Cover, of Old Seve Porcelaine, partly Blue Ground, Painted in Compartments of Marine Views – 45 Marked on the Dish’. It was recorded in 1826 in His Majesty’s Closet, Principal Floor, Carlton House: ‘No. 39. A Broth Bason, Cover and Plate, of blue and gold Seve Porcelain, with banded edge, painted in marine subjects after Vernet’.
