Sèvres soft-paste porcelain broth basin, cover and oval stand. Bleu nouveau ground with gilded decoration and six reserves (of kidney shape on the cover and stand, oval on the basin) are painted with single putti in landscape settings. The double-twisted-branch handles of the basin and the raised berried branch handle of the cover are in white heightened with gold. Two gold bands run round the foot of the basin. The rims of the basin, cover and stand are gilded; that of the stand is notched on the outside. Flanking the reserves are U-shaped foliate motifs seemingly looped over studs which, in some instances, terminate along one arm in a laurel trail and along the other in husks and bead-and-reel motifs. In the well of the stand is an oak-and-acorn garland and between the reserves looped oak-and-acorn trails. Similar looped trails, composed of laurel leaves and berries, separate the reserves on the cover and stand. The bands framing the reserves are tooled with a complex pattern, comprising three diagonal bands (two burnished flanking one matt, down which runs a serpentine burnished line) alternating with diagonal lines on a matt ground. The lines, alternately of zigzag and straight design, number seven on the basin and nine on the cover and stand.
Provenance
Recorded in 1826 in the Confectionary, Carlton House: ‘No 151. A Broth Basin and Cover of dark blue and gold, oval Plateau, painted in medallions of Cupids’.
