Herodotus is regarded as the ‘father of history’ in European literature. Writing in the fifth century BC, he is famous for his history of the Persian Wars between the Achaemenid Persian Empire and the Greek world. Herodotus’ history went further than simply recounting the events of the wars; he also described the founding of the Persian Empire and the histories of the various lands that were conquered.
This translation into English is by William Beloe, a writer and translator. He was joint proprietor and Assistant Editor of the conservative review the British Critic from its foundation in 1793 to the end of its first series (1813). The pinnacle of his career came in 1803, when he was appointed Under-Librarian at the British Museum, but he was dismissed in 1806 after being held responsible for thefts by the print-seller James Deighton, from the library's collection of engravings.Provenance
