Traité de moralité sur la valeur : divisé en deux livres / Jacques Cassaigne 1674

Late seventeenth-century mottled brown calf binding, with gold-tooling on both sides and spine. In the centre of both sides, the arms of William III and Mary II (England, France, Scotland and Ireland quartered on an escutcheon of pretence billetty a lion rampant [Nassau]) surrounded by the garter and surmounted by a crown. All sides of both boards tooled with vine roll. Spine divided into six compartments by raised bands, each tooled with a floral roll, now very worn. Second compartment contains additional piece of red leather with double fillet border and the title: ‘MORALE SUR LA VALEUR’; third compartment contains additional piece of green leather with double fillet border and: ‘PARIS 1672’ [sic]. All other compartments tooled with double fillet border, vine corner tools and a centre tool of fleurons and swirls. Tail of spine tooled with vine roll (head of spine very damaged). All edges painted with speckled design in red. Binding very similar to RCIN 1086095 (Add B 48.8), though different centre tool used on spine. The date given on the spine doesn’t match the publication date of this volume, but is identical to the date on the spine of RCIN 1086095, perhaps further suggesting two might have been bound and tooled at the same time. | 16.5 x 2.0 cm (book measurement (inventory)) | RCIN 1086094
