-
A tall four poster bed with a high carved tester. The pediment shaped headboard is edged with scrolls and volutes culminating in a central finial feature. The tester reflects the scrolls and volutes and is topped at the corners with 'Marotesque' finials. The double valance around the tester is decorated with crimson passementerie forming organic decoration. The ceiling of the tester is dome shaped and matches the cornice in design. The whole covered in crimson damask finished with gallon trimming.
Provenance
Made for George, Prince of Wales and Princess Caroline of Wales, to stand in the Queen's Bedroom, Hampton Court Palace. Supplied 12 May 1716.
A warrant of 28 March 1715 shows Thomas Hill and Jeremiah Fletcher as the upholsterers using silk supplied by the mercers Richard Chamberlayne and John Johnson; the trimmings supplied by laceman William Weekes. All mounted on a structure provided by Richard Roberts.
Accompanied by a mirror, supplied by John Gumley, and a pair of armchairs and eighteen stools, probably supplied by Richard Roberts (the seat-furniture now dispersed). The bed was cleaned and repaired by John Gilbert in 1728. The crimson silk damask bed curtains are replacements.
Further conservation took place in 2009. -
