Mathilde / dediée a Monsieur frere unique du Roy. 1667
Contemporary red goatskin binding; gold-tooling throughout. Identical design on left and right sides: outer double and single fillet border, with fleur-de-lis in each corner; in each of the four inner corners, the intertwined monogram ‘EM’, surmounted by a crown and framed on either side by two fronds tied with a bow, with a small fluer-de-lis beneath. In the centre, the arms of France, barred, quartered with the arms of England, Scotland and Ireland, surmounted by a crown and framed on either side by two large fronds tied with a bow. Inside and sides of both boards decorated with floral roll tool. Spine divided into six compartments by raised bands, each decorated with a floral roll. Second compartment contains double fillet and dotted roll border, and the title: ‘MATHILDE’. All other compartments contain double fillet border with swirl corner tools and diamond-shaped central tools of swirls and pointille dots; floral roll on head and tail of spine. Original marbled paper on both boards. Though the coat of arms are those of Henrietta Anne, daughter of Charles I and wife of Philippe, Duke of Orleans, it is unclear as to who the monogrammed ‘EM’ refers. Henrietta was also known as ‘Minette’ and ‘Madame’, but neither of these would explain the monogram. | 18.5 x 3.5 cm (book measurement (inventory)) | RCIN 1085389
