Oliver Goldsmith's Citizen of the World is a collection of letters purportedly written by a Chinese philosopher, Lien Chi , to friends in China. By using the motif of a traveller from 'the East' entirely unaccustomed to European morals and customs, in the vein of the 1721 Persian Letters of Montesquieu, Goldsmith was able to make pointed observations on the pecularities of British social life and manners that he would not ordinarily be able to do.
