Suetonius' account of the early Roman Empire recounts in salacious detail the lives of Julius Caesar and the first eleven emperors of Rome to the death of Domitian. Suetonius wrote his work during the reign of the emperor Hadrian prior to his dismissal from the imperial court in AD 121/122 and designed his work to portray the early emperors in a poor light so that the reign of Hadrian would appear more successful. Although doubts can be cast over the historical accuracy of much of his text, Suetonius is nevertheless an excellent source for scandal and has influenced writers to the present day.
This volume was printed in Florence in 1510.Provenance
