Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), better known by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll, dreamed up the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland while on a river picnic with Lorina, Alice and Edith, the three daughters of Henry Liddell, the dean of Christ Church, Oxford. Dodgson, a mathematical lecturer at the time, had befriended the girls in 1856 when he photographed Christ Church cathedral, and was close to the Liddell family until 1863.
Alice Pleasance Hargreaves (née Liddell) (1852-1934), was the second of Henry Liddell's three daughters of Henry Liddell. When the girls persuaded Dodgson to tell them a story while on a river picnic in 1862, it was Alice whose name was used for the story’s main character, and it was to her that Dodgson later gave his manuscript booklet of the famous story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This edition of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was acquired during the reign of Queen Victoria. The binder has recorded the name of the author on the book's spine as 'C. Dodgson', rather than using the author's pseudonym, Lewis Carroll.Provenance
