Title-page with engraved anatomical figure of a woman by [Francesco] Valegio and [Caterina] Doino, engraved portrait of the author on C4 by Spirendi Ghirard (1617-1632) after Pietro Mera (1570-1633), woodcut head- and tail-pieces, woodcut rubricated letters. Contemporary binding typical of books bound for Charles II of red goatskin with triple-fillet border to central panel, with cipher of Charles II (a crowned pair of inverted Cs between pair of palm fronds) to each corner, spine in seven compartments, lettered in the second with the rest with the crowned cipher of Charles II, all edges gilt.
Provenance
Purchased by Charles II as part of the library of John Morris (d. 1658), the first major acquisition to the Old Royal Library at St James's Palace following the Restoration in 1660. Presented to the nation by George II, sold as a duplicate by the British Museum in 1788 (Lot no. 1533) for 1s. Likely acquired by the Royal Library before 1860 from a sale organised by the bookseller Thomas Thorpe (1791-1851).
