This book was used by King James II, and was thus the last missal to be used by an English Sovereign. It includes extra prayers for the Royal family, including for the King (James II), his wife Queen Mary of Modena, and Queen Katherine of Braganza, the King's mother, and for the Queen's successful pregnancy in 1688. A note elsewhere in the book records that the Queen's son (James Francis Edward, later known as the Old Pretender) was born on 10 June 1688 and James II was deposed in December that same year.
Used by King James II and later owned by Cardinal York; acquired via the bookseller Ellis, who purchased this, along with other books formerly belonging to Cardinal York from Mr Stephen Ram of Ramsfort the proprietor of Bermondsey Abbey, 17 December 1862.

Full red leather, with the arms of James II on the covers. Bound in red calf, with arms of Charles I to centre of filleted panel design, with ornate tooling to spine of small tools in cross-shaped compartments.
