In Venice around 1600 there was a fashion for bindings in the French 'fanfare' style. The binding of this book of Psalms features several elements typical of that style, including an interlacing fillet with an infill of flora and fauna.
Binding information
Contemporary Italian binding in red goatskin, in 'fanfare' design with apostolic figure to centre, strapwork design with infill tooling of lions, deer, hares and dogs, and various differing foliate scrolls, all within double fillet frame border, with small club roll tool. Spine divided into six compartments, with repeating design of two foliate scroll tools. All edges gilt and gauffered with foliate design. Two clasps (one with metal component missing).
Provenance
Probably acquired by Queen Victoria. Recorded as being in the Royal Library by 1893.
