The Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary was held at Westminster Abbey on 22 June 1911. The Order of Service, arranged by the Lambeth Palace librarian, Claude Jenkins and the Dean of Westminster, Armitage Robinson, sought to balance tradition with innovations to modernise the ceremony. Aside from minor changes to the words spoken at the Crowning and the reintroduction of the Sermon that had been omitted for King Edward VII's Coronation in 1902, the service was largely the same as its predecessor.
This intimate copy of the Order of Service was specially printed for the use of Queen Mary on the day. It was presented to the Queen by Randall Davidson, Archbishop of Canterbury ahead of the ceremony. While his inscription is dated 22 June 1911, it seems likely that the book was given to Queen Mary some time in advance of the Coronation, perhaps at a dress rehearsal—the Queen having annotated parts of the service in pencil, noting where she needed to kneel, sit or stand. On the verso of the first flyleaf, she signed her name and wrote: "I used this book / at our coronation".
A note in Queen Mary's hand tipped in at the second flyleaf states that the book was bound by Florence Paget, who had bound the Order of Service used by King Edward VII at his Coronation in 1902 (RCIN 1080420). However, this appears to have been tipped in by mistake as the unsigned binding is not in Paget's style and she was no longer active in 1911.Provenance
