The Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was held at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937, five months after the King's accession to the throne following the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in December 1936. The King and Queen received identical copies of the Order of Service, specially printed by the publishers Eyre & Spottiswood and bound in vellum. The front board is tooled with the Royal Arms and the back board contains their joint cypher 'GRE'. This is Queen Elizabeth's copy, used by her on the day. Following the example of her immediate predecessor as consort, Queen Mary, she signed it: "I used this book at my Coronation / Elizabeth R / May 12th 1937".
