The ‘Glorious’ Revolution of 1688 brought about major constitutional changes in the relationship between the Monarch, the State and the Church of England. This meant that changes to the Coronation Service were needed. The Coronation Oath was amended and the Presentation of the Bible was introduced. As William III and Mary II were to reign as Joint Sovereigns, other changes to the service were also necessary. This manuscript of the adapted service was presented to the King and Queen who signed it: ‘We do approve of ye Coronation Offices as it is contained in this book. William R. Marie R.’
Provenance
Presented to William III and Mary II in 1689; purchased by King George IV from Budd & Calkin, 1820
